You’ve heard about the funny expression that no one is supposed to wear white after Labor Day, I suppose. This is largely an American ‘fashion rule,’ and its origins are quite unclear to many. In any case, Labor Day takes place on the first Monday of September, so it is still safe to wear white now! More so, the summer is here, and that definitely means that white is one of the best colors to wear for the next couple of months.
White can be boring, that is true; but white is also the best color to accentuate other details. It is the epitome of simplicity and freshness. This summer, I can’t think of a better color to wear than white, and here are some ideas that can help you take advantage of this color. (Yes, I do realize that some say it is not a color at all).
Go for the glam look with a burst of color accents.
White is as pure as you can get, and for a night out, you might need to spice things up a bit. Your body will love you for wearing white on a hot summer eve, but you might want a dash of color here and there to catch someone else’s eye.
The idea is simple: find a nice white dress that suits your fancy. Whether you are talking about a body hugging short dress or a long flowing creation, it doesn’t matter. What will give you the edge is what you wear with it.
Grab some spiky heels that are bright in color. Metallic blue, fiery red, or even hot pink – take your pick and watch while people’s heads turn. Of course, you can’t leave it at that. You also need to choose your accessories wisely. Get some glitzy jewelry – earrings, a long and layered necklace, and maybe an anklet.
Go for self-expression.
I’m all for individuality and self-expression! Not everyone has an excellent sense of fashion, but most of the time, when you stick to what’s comfortable for you in every sense, you end up looking and feeling great. So why not take a blank sheet (that’s practically what white is anyway) and paint yourself a unique piece of artwork?
Speaking of comfortable, there probably isn’t a get up that is more comfortable than jeans and a shirt. Just because you’re wearing this combination does not mean that you cannot look nice. Pick out a pair of your most comfortable jeans – black or blue – and pair it with a t-shirt. That’s your canvass.
Now it’s time to pick out your accessories. There are so many things that you can do with this ‘template,’ and your imagination and creativity are practically the limits!
One thing that you can do is get a pair of sandals; Bohemian sandals, Jesus sandals, or strappy sandals – whichever you choose, the rest of your accessories will depend on the look of the sandals. The next step is to pick out a light vest that you can wear over the t-shirt. Take note of the emphasis on light, as you wouldn’t want to wear several layers of clothing and end up getting a heatstroke! Pick something that will match your sandals, but be freer with the colors. I personally like deep red, yellows, and purples – not necessarily altogether. Last, get funky earrings that will complete the look. Go for handcrafted pieces – hand painted clay beads and simple crystals are my personal favorites.
Go bring out those jeans!
White jeans? Why not? As long as you take care where you sit down, it shouldn’t be a problem. White jeans are all the rave these days, and I totally get why. Contrary to popular opinion, once you wear a pair of white jeans, they DO NOT all look the same. There are so many styles, so many materials that you can find out there.
Stretch jeans, tapered jeans, skinny jeans, white jeans with lots of pockets, denim-spandex white jeans – name it, you’ll find it! Again, the trick is in pairing your white jeans with the right top and in accessorizing. Aside from the colorful accents that I have already mentioned in the preceding sections, do not hesitate to pair white jeans with more subtle shades, such as grey. You just might be surprised at how white and grey look great together!
Go for the edgy look.
White and edgy seem to be strange bedfellows, don’t they? That’s the thing with white, though – you can do practically anything with it to achieve the look you want for the day. With a white dress of the right cut, you can end up looking as edgy and strong as you want.
How do you do this?
Get yourself the right accessories – a leather belt (studded if you want), black leather boots, and silver earrings. You can even kick it up a notch and get bracelets, bangles, or armbands. Can you imagine how kick butt this look is?
With all these things you can do with white clothing, whoever made that ‘rule’ about not wearing white after Labor Day should be tested.
