4 Comic Book Movies That Would Not Suck (And Who I Think Should Be In Them)

February 12, 2013 by abovepop Leave a Comment

Comic book movies have recently taken Hollywood by storm, with major franchises such as Batman, Spider-Man, and the entire Avengers roster making insane amounts of moolah at the box office. Hitting both the film buffs and the comicbook geek demographics, it doesn’t seem like Hollywood will be letting up from drawing from comicbooks in the near future. Here then are some comicbook movie ideas that I personally think would not suck bigtime:

Y: The Last Man

Brian K. Vaughan – Vertigo

There have been a lot of talks of a film adaptation of this dystopian sci-fi series wherein all but one man – Yorick Brown – survives a sudden and mysterious death that wipes out all males. “Y” is one of the best comicbook series of the past decade and is perfectly suited for the silver screen.

Casting picks:

Yorick: Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Agent 355: Gina Torres / Danai Gurira

Dr. Mann: Yunjin Kim / Maggie Q

The Sandman

Neil Gaiman – Vertigo

Saying that “The Sandman” is a “must-read” is definitely one of the biggest understatements that can ever be said of a comicbook series. The personification of dreams may be a tad difficult to pull off, but with a proper writer and director, The Sandman could be one of the most poignant and artistic comicbook movies to come in a long time.

Casting picks:

Morpheus: Adrien Brody

Preacher

Garth Ennis – Vertigo

Another Vertigo classic, Garth Ennis’ tale of preacher Jesse Custer’s quest to find and kill God himself is sure to raise a lot of controversy with  religious types everywhere. Custer is joined by his girlfriend Tulip and vampire buddy Cassidy, all the while being pursued by a secret organization called The Grail led by megalomaniac Herr Starr, and the Angel of Death himself, the Saint of Killers. An action-packed adventure of epic proportions, the Preacher would translate perfectly on the big screen.

Casting picks:

Jesse Custer:  James Franco

Cassidy:  Michael Fassbender / Sam Rockwell

Tulip: Ali Larter / Elizabeth Banks

Lost At Sea

Bryan Lee O’Malley – Oni Press

A coming of age tale of 18-year-old Raleigh, who takes a rather existentially-chalenged road trip with her newfound friends from Califronia back to Vancouver. The story is lighthearted and deeply emotional at the same time -something that would make a great coming of age flick.

Casting picks:

Raleigh: Elle Fanning / Chloe Moretz

What other comicbooks would you like to see grace the silver screen? Who do you think would be a better fit for the characters mentioned above?
