Facebook – everyone has at least one account and it’s a great way to keep in touch with friends who have moved to other countries, relatives who you don’t see often, classmates, former officemates – basically everyone! Facebook users log into the website at least once a day – to update their status, to check their friends’ status, to read messages – however, that is no longer the case.
Recent surveys show that there is a decrease in usage amongst Facebook users (teens in particular). Researches attribute this to the proliferation of other social networking sites such as Twitter and Snapchat. Others find that Facebook has become exceedingly boring; others have had it with Facebook’s constant privacy changes; while others – probably just can’t be bothered. However, one other (unspoken) reason why people are no longer as excited about Facebook is because the site has become the hangout of annoying friends.
No – your friends, per se, are not annoying – but their Facebook posts have the ability to drive you bat-sh!t crazy! There’s already a list of annoying couple-snaps found on Facebook – and all over the internet are lists showing the types of Facebook friends that can drive the sanest of all people up the wall. General Forum has created not just 1 list but 2 comprehensive lists of annoying friends (3rd list is on the way), and since there are over 40 types, only 7 (slightly modified) of these can be viewed below.
Obsessed with Sports Facebook Friend
They’re the ones whose status message can be converted into a live-blog of any sporting event. They’ll give you a blow-by-blow coverage from pre-match interviews to post-match commentaries. You might as well read their feed instead of watching the game live on TV.
Fitness Freak Friend
If you’re friends with your Personal Trainer, expect to read updates on how his training is progressing. Getting endless “see-how-much-training-I’m-doing” updates from friends who just got into the fitness groove can be really tiring … more tiring than running a full marathon – twice – in one day.
Fit friends who post pictures of their six-pack abs, or post status updates of the last ultra marathon they finished can be a pain too.
Jet-Setter Friend
It’s all right to post pictures of your holiday – your friends would be happy to see you finally having a much deserved break. If this is you – you’re not the one referred to in this category. Jet-setter friends are those who post about all the places they’ve been with the sole intention of bragging about their trips and making the “mortals” envious of their lifestyle.
Shares Too Much Friend
Putting a status saying that you’re sick is fine, but describing the colonoscopy in detail is not. It is also not fine to post details (even hints of it for that matter) of the fight you had with your significant other. Some things, such as doctors appointments, your health, your relationship issues, are just best kept private.
Proud Parent Friend
Parents will always be proud of their children – and there’s no harm in that. If, however, all your Facebook posts revolve around your baby and your baby’s accomplishments (my baby poo-ed twice today! how amazing is my baby) is too much. Share the milestones (baby walked today) that will make everyone say “awww – how sweet” not the normal everyday things babies do.
Everything’s Great Friend
Yes – these are posts from overly optimistic and exuberant friends. To them, anything and everything is great. Hey! Not saying it’s bad to have such a cheerful outlook in life – but putting so much emphasis on the fact that everything is coming up roses can be a drag. People will wonder if you’re covering up for something.
Hashtag Friend
They’re the ones who bombard every single status message with about a million and a half hashtags. You’ll have to strain your eyes to read beyond the endless parade of #… #… #…. Seriously, is there a pressing need hashtag everything? Maybe they were posting via twitter and their tweets just automatically sync with Facebook.
Personally, I admit to being one (or a couple) of Annoying Facebook Friends according to the main lists found in General Forum. However – I am aware of the trend of my status messages so I have taken it upon myself to limit my visibility to only my close friends and my family.
