Mortality.
It’s something that we all have to face. The inevitability of death looms over us as we live our lives. It may be through an accident, sickness, or old age, but whatever way or form we meet our death, one thing’s for certain, we want to meet it with dignity.
Unfortunately, there are people who will die not because of sickness, death or old age – they will meet it through sheer stupidity. Every year, there are people who die in circumstances that are just so stupid you’d either slap your forehead or think ‘the human race is made better by removing them from the gene pool.’ The latter sentiment is what drives the Darwin Awards, a fictional award for people who die stupid deaths. Best Nursing Masters just published a new infographic that discusses the Darwin Awards. The Darwin Awards (though not truly and award, in the strictest sense of the word), honors people who have ‘self-selected’ themselves out of the gene pool. According to the explanation in darwinawards.com –
In the spirit of Charles Darwin, the Darwin Awards commemorate individuals who protect our gene pool by making the ultimate sacrifice of their own lives. Darwin Award winners eliminate themselves in an extraordinarily idiotic manner, thereby improving our species’ chances of long-term survival.
The infographic cites a number of events that are truly worthy of a Darwin Award. One of the most recent examples is of a man who died by planking from a seven-storey balcony.
