Bought the wrong foundation? Fast fixes for bad foundation

June 29, 2011 by Katerina 2 Comments

Every beauty article will tell you how important it is to find foundation that matches your skin tone. If only it were so easy to find one! We’ve all come home with foundation that we thought would work for us, only to look into the mirror and think, ‘Something isn’t right.’ Here are some of the more common issues with foundation and the best beauty fix.

‘I bought the wrong color of foundation!’

The weird lighting in department stores can fool us into thinking that we’ve got the perfect match. But then it looks pasty on us (foundation is too light) or yellowish (foundation is too dark).

That’s why it’s important to test foundation, then go outside in natural light. If you have acidic skin, the foundation can change color after a few minutes, so let it sit there for a while and double-check before you buy the product.

But that’s preventive. If you’re stuck with the product, and can’t exchange it, you can correct the color by mixing foundations: add a darker color of liquid foundation, or apply a darker shade of face powder on top.

‘My face and my neck don’t have the same color!’

If the color of your face is darker than the color of your neck (which can happen if you’re out in the sun a lot) then just darken your neck with warm bronzer.

‘My face looks red!’

The best foundation fix for this is to pick a sheer formula. Yes, it won’t hide the redness – it’s not supposed to. Just use it to even out the overall skin tone, and then balance the redness by applying a bi of bronzer all over the face, neck and chest.

‘My skin texture is bad!’

Foundation can correct color but not texture. If you have orange peel skin, you need a long-term solution (better moisturizer and skin care products, possibly from a dermatologist, who can give higher-strength prescriptions). But for now, you can plump up the skin and even out complexion with a moisturizer. Allow that to set for about two minutes before applying foundation.

[…] We understand that on a blah day, no one’s in the mood to fuss over makeup. But if you are going to do just one thing, make it foundation: it will even out your complexion and help you look fresh and put together. Or you can use a good primer that has built-in light-reflecting and color-correcting pigments that help even out skin tone. (Read our tips on fixing foundation.) […]
