Are your closets crammed to the brim? Before you dump out and reorganize the contents, read this article. We’ll help you come up with a ‘closet strategy’ so your closets become clean, and more importantly, stay clean. Tidying up will be so much easier. In fact, you may never have to reorganize your closet again! Read on and clutter-proof your closet forever.
Start with a sketch
There are so many products that can help you organize your closet: boxes, hanging containers, adjustable shelving. But before you rush off and spend good money, take a ruler or tape measure and get the exact dimensions of your closet. Then think about what you want to put into it, and measure those too. It’s pointless to get those cute shoe organizers when your heels won’t fit into them!
Once you have your closet dimensions and the storage dimensions, you can figure out how many boxes/containers can fit into your closet. The easiest way to do this is to sketch the closet design on graph paper. ‘I can fit about 6 shoeboxes of x size on the floor,’ for example.
Custom-fit the shelves
This is why pre-measuring closets are so important. Pre-made shelving systems usually measure about 12 feet. If you’re closet’s too small, send them to the supplier for cutting. Don’t attempt to cut them yourself, you’ll just end up with very ugly (and dangerous!) jagged edges.
And, if you do decide to buy a closet organization system, compare prices. Don’t forget to ask about the cost of the mounting hardware, and if it’s included in the set or should be purchased separately.
Get creative
Not all storage solutions are expensive. For example, instead of buying those expensive hangers, just glue Velcro to hangers so the straps won’t fall off. Install hooks on the doors, and sew little loops into jackets so they’re easier to hang. Frame some mesh (available at hardware stores) and nail on the cabinet door to hang earrings and accessories.
Maximize eye-level storage
Any shelves that are at eye-level should carry frequently used items. Seasonal clothes, or dresses that are only worn on special occasions, can go on higher shelves or the back of the cabinet. Remove any clothes that you haven’t worn in two years (read our article on conquering clutter forever, to get more clutter-busting habits).
Divide and conquer
Group items that you’re likely to use together. For example, fold the pillowcases into the marching bedsheets, or put all your formal evening jewelry in one box and your everyday bangles in another. They’ll be easier to find, and the less you have to rummage through all the closet contents, the less mess you’ll make everyday.
