Doggy park do’s and dont’s

January 19, 2012 by Ronda Leave a Comment

Dog parks are your pet’s idea of disneyland: plenty of space to play, romp, and even make another furry friend. But you can’t simply give your pet free rein—or, in this case, free leash. Here are some doggy park do’s and don’t’s that every responsible pet owner should follow.

keep an eye on your pet

While it’s okay to unwind and relax, don’t forget that your dog is still your responsibility. Play attention to where he is, and how he is behaving around other dogs and other dog owners. This will help you avoid any bigger problems, like a dog fight! Answer your emails some other time and grab this as quality time with your pet.

Remember that dogs are different

Your dog may love to be with other dogs, but some breeds (or some pets) are territorial and may be aggressive. So give other pets plenty of space and watch other pets for any signs of discomfort or irritation. (Read up on the different breeds at akc.org)

Know your own dog’s likes and dislikes

If your dog likes to play fetch or to chew things then go to the park armed with toys. If he likes to run around then bring a leash that’s long and be prepared to do some running yourself! Or, have him trained so that he will return immediately if you call.

Dress for the occassion

Chances are your pet will be extra playful and will jump, lick, slobber and generally get playful with you. Wearing comfy clothes will let you focus on having fun without worrying about ruining your outfit.

Pick up after your dog

You know what we mean.
