With the summer season looming over us, fanboys are eagerly anticipating the start of the US summer extravaganza when high profile movies start coming out practically every week. Of course, when it comes to fanboys the most anticipated movies will be the movie adaptations of various iconic comic book superheroes.
This year is particularly notable because of a number of relatively high profile comicbook movies. Here are four notable movies that are worth the wait.
X-Men: First Class
With Hollywood in a reboot frenzy, it’s not surprising that the X-Men franchise will get rebooted. But X-Men: First Class is not just a garden variety reboot. It occupies that weird space where reboot and prequel meet. The movie will be about the formation of the X-Men but will also tell about the friendship of a young Charles Xavier and Erik Lenhnsherr. If you’ve seen the word young, then you’ll have a fairly good idea about the timeframe where the movie takes place. Expect to see younger versions of your favorite core X-Men. Nope, you won’t see a young Wolverine – though there might be a Wolverine cameo if rumors are to be believed.
Thor
The Asgardian God of Thunder gets his own movie finally. Starring relatively unknown Australian actor Chris Hemsworth. The movie will be directed by esteemed actor/director Kenneth Branagh. Knowing Branagh’s Shakesepearean background the hope is he will use this to tell a more mature story. Among all of the comicbook movies this summer, Thor is the one that is considered the most unpredictable in terms of content. At present, not a lot of things have been heard about the movie so there’s great speculation if Thor will follow conventional Hollywood formulas or if Branagh will somehow deviate from it, in much the same way Ang Lee’s The Hulk was a deviation from established Hollywood summer blockbusters.
Green Lantern
It’s a good thing that DC Comics is now making real efforts to bring more of its iconic superheroes to the big screen. Green Lantern stars Ryan Reynolds, who is not a stranger to playing comicbook characters having played Deadpool in the Wolverine movie. Green Lantern is hotly anticipated because it is going to be a special effects heavy movie. The costume alone is a CGI effect. Even though Reynolds will play Hal Jordan, the trailer hints that it his personality may be an amalgam of both Jordan and Kyle Rayner.
Captain America: The First Avenger
Captain America: The First Avenger is another Marvel movie that will serve as the introduction of Captain America and also serve as a lead off to the Avengers movie that will come out a couple of years from now. The titular character will be played by Chris Evans, who have also played Johnny Storm in The Fantastic Four movies. This is a hotly anticipated movie because of the popularity of Captain America.
