Before playing any game, we usually learn the rules beforehand. The other unspoken rules, however, are best learned while playing. Golf can be daunting for beginners since the behavior expected of them is fairly different from players of other sports. Here are some basic rules of etiquette that can help even the most unseasoned golfer behave in a manner befitting a professional. Also, other players will be very grateful for it.
Keep Up The Pace
Unless you have the course all to yourself, you or your group must play in accordance with the pace of other players or groups. Other players will not like having to wait too long for their shot at the hole and if you don’t want to wait, don’t make them wait for you. In other words, avoid slow play.
Bring Your Own Gear
Don’t be a burden on your fellow players and bring the equipment necessary for your game. The rules state that borrowing clubs is not allowed so make use of the maximum number of clubs you can place in your bag and have 14 clubs at the ready. Stock up on tees and golf balls, as well.
Sportsmanship Matters
Don’t be a sore loser and show how much of a sportsman you are by being jovial. Congratulate the winners and if need be, console the losers but thank them all for a good game.
Be Quiet
Golfers require concentration and you should respect this by staying quiet on the course, especially when someone is about to swing. No matter how happy you are about a good game or swing, resist the urge to yell or make any other disruptive noise.
Wait Your Turn
Have respect for the order of players and their turns. If a certain order was established before the start of the game, make sure you respect that and stick to the number you drew beforehand for the remainder of the holes.
Dress for the Game
Most golf courses have dress codes and you must dress in accordance with them. You don’t need to have expensive golf shoes or gloves but you must, at least, look respectable.
No Joyrides
It’s tempting to have fun on a golf cart but there are rules for them for a reason. Abide by the rules and ensure that everyone has a safe game.
Leave it Alone
Never move the ball. Where it lands is where you’ll play it, and nowhere else.
Move Along
Once your group is done with a certain hole, move on to the next hole immediately. There are other people who might want to play there and you’ll be inconveniencing them by loitering.
Stay Safe
Safety is of utmost importance on a course. Golf balls and clubs can cause considerable damage to people and property so it is best to keep an eye out and take precautions before swinging.
Golf may seem like a sport with a lot of rules but by observing other players, it shouldn’t be difficult to keep up. If in doubt, you can never go wrong with courtesy.
