Garages are one of the last things that come to mind when people think of areas in the home to improve or renovate. This oft-neglected space, however, also needs some loving.

If you’re wondering what you can do with such a boring space, here are some simple garage improvement projects that you might want to tackle:
1. De-cluttering – Garages are clutter magnets. Since they often double as storage areas, simply de-cluttering your garage can take as much effort as a major home improvement project. Do a little spring cleaning even if it’s not spring with your garage as the main focus. The good thing with de-cluttering your garage though is that you don’t need any budget to do this, unless you have tons of stuff and end up hiring a moving van or even renting out storage units just to clean up more space in your home. De-cluttering your garage might also yield valuable finds, such as great furniture that can be repurposed or long lost memorabilia you can use to decorate some other part of the house. Of course, a garage sale as part of the de-cluttering process is also a great way to make extra money that you can use for other home improvement projects.
2. Installing shelving units – Garages are pretty spacious and so can double as storage space. However, as mentioned above, they’re clutter magnets. To make the most of your garage’s space yet make sure that they don’t end up looking like a dumpsite, install some shelving units and put in other space organisers, from handy hooks to handy baskets and plastic containers. If you’re doing this make sure that you plan out the garage’s “storage layout” so that your shelving units are functional, with ample space for boxes, tools, and all the stuff to go in each unit, and a layout that makes sense so that they’re easy to maintain.
3. Security upgrades – Installing a garage door is one of the best ways to upgrade your home’s security since they are one of the most common points of entry for burglaries (after your front and back door and windows). But just because you already have a garage door installed does not mean that you’re not vulnerable to burglaries anymore. Inspect your garage door regularly to make sure that all parts are working fine and still very secure. Buying replacement parts in a timely manner can save you a lot of money later on since it will mean less chance of having to buy and install a replacement door.
