The first step to decorating your home (or one area, like a bedroom) is to choose a particular look or theme. That sounds easy enough—if you’re Martha Stewart. Most of us, however, have no idea where to start, or be torn between so many options. ‘That Oriental sofa looks really beautiful…but so does that shabby chic lamp!’ Unfortunately, they don’t go together. Oh, if only we knew what look we really wanted!
Here are some tips on how to choose a theme or look for your home, and finally decide on the best decorating style for your taste, personality and lifestyle.
Find inspiration
Go through magazines and catalogues and tear out or photocopy the pictures that catch your eye. Then, figure out what it is you really love. Is it the colors of the lamp? The textures of that carpet? Make little notes on the pages, but don’t fret if you can’t pin down your preferences right away. Just keep collecting photos and eventually you’ll see a pattern in the types of furniture, paint colors or room configurations you tend to gravitate towards.
Revisit old favorites
Think about the stuff you already own and love. Maybe you have a favorite dish, painting or even dress. Their colors can already be a starting point for your design. Maybe you like the black and red patterns in a particular lampshade, or the exotic vibe of a Batik throw pillow you bought in a trip to Indonesia.
Look at your closet
Open your clothes cabinet and you’ll have an idea of the colors you love, or even your personality. Do you like trendy things, or stick to classic neutrals? Does this particular blue dress always makes you feel calmer and happier?
Examine your interests
Your hobbies and interests can also help you decipher what you need and want from your room. If you’ve always loved photography, then maybe you need a style that will help you show off your favorite photos on the walls. For example, you can have photos printed in black and white, place them in plain frames, and use them in a modern kind of design.
Also pay attention to the houses you like in your favorite movies, or what catches your eye during trips. Have you ever told yourself, ‘I’d love to live in a house like that!’
Visit furniture showrooms
Check out the showrooms of furniture retailers. You can try going to their stores or visit their websites, which will often have a ‘look book’ of styles.
