mos. The high level of insulation of the thermos means that it can keep heat for hours. In fact, it can retain it from between 8 to 24 hours depending on the level of insulation. This means a thermos is a good way of slow cooking meals. Cooking with a thermos is not hard at all. Here’s how you can start cooking with a thermos.

Look for the best quality Thermos

Choose a thermos that has a wide mouth and with a large capacity. This ensures that food can be easily placed inside and you can cook large batches of food. When looking for a thermos look for one that is stainless steel vacuum insulated. This is the best kind of insulation. A glass insulated or Styrofoam insulated thermos will not keep heat as efficiently as the stainless steel insulated ones. Be sure to properly label this and only use this thermos for cooking food. Buy a separate thermos for drinking.

Preheat the Thermos

You will need to preheat the Thermos before you actually use it for cooking. Preheating is very easy, all you need to do is to boil a pot of water and pour the boiling water into the Thermos and cover it. The heat of the water will be absorbed by the thermos. Pour the water when you are about to use the thermos for cooking.

Cooking methods for the Thermos

Depending on the food you plan to cook, you can cook directly on the thermos or start from the stove. For food like rice or oatmeal, you can cook it directly on the thermos. Just put the rice or oatmeal inside and then add boiling water. Cover the thermos tightly and allow it to cook for four to six hours.

Even simple soups can be cooked in this manner. Just put all of the chopped ingredients inside the thermos then add the boiling water or broth. Seal the thermos tightly and leave it in a lying position for four hours. After the allotted time put the thermos upright to make sure that all the ingredients are cooked. The soup will usually be ready in eight hours.

For other types of food, initial cooking should be done on the stove. This, in effect, will turn the thermos into a slow cooker. For example, when cooking a stew, do the initial cooking on the stove then transfer the stew when it reaches the simmering stage. Allow the stew to cook inside the thermos for up to eight hours.
