A computer is not that cheap so, if you’re not the type of person who always wants to have the latest and fastest gadget, chances are you’ll want to keep your computer running as long as possible.
The problem though is when your computer begins to exhibit signs of ‘old age.’ The question then becomes ‘do I still fix my PC or do I need to get a new one?’ Here’s how to find out if your computer problems can still be remedied.
First, you need to determine the overall speed of your computer and its capacity. This is probably the main factor for determining if you need to buy a new computer or not. As new operating systems and applications are developed, the minimum requirements to make these software run also increases. You may have bought a relatively fast computer but in a few years – as faster computer parts are released – your computer will already be considered slow.
At some point it may not be able even meet the minimum requirements needed to run a piece of software. If you need to run an application and your computer doesn’t meet the minimum requirements to make it run then the outcome is quite simple – you really need to get a new computer.
If you have been using your computer, you’ll notice that over the years it gets slower and slower. This is because the whole system gets bloated from many unwanted files. Clean up your whole system and from there determine if it still has the kind of responsiveness you need. Delete all of the junk files in your system and uninstall programs you don’t use anymore. You should then defragment your hard drive. These steps will help make your computer a little faster. If it’s still sluggish then you can consider getting a new hard drive or adding another stick of memory or RAM.
These are the kind of palliative measures that can help extend the life of your computer. But if you are the type who runs really extensive, resource hungry applications like video editing or games then at some point you really need to buy a new computer.
Errors become more common as a computer ages. Software errors often appear and you can fix these by either using newer versions of the software or downloading updates or fixes to the application or the operating system.
Hardware errors, on the other hand, are another matter altogether. These errors are a true sign of age and if these often happen to you then you have no recourse but to buy a new computer.
