Natural Cures for Indigestion

January 1, 2011 by Jamie 6 Comments

We’ve all been through it: we eat too much, and feel bloated and uncomfortable. Sometimes we even experience a burning sensation in the abdomen area. Uh-oh, we have indigestion.

When indigestion strikes, you can reach for these organic cures that can be made from ingredients you probably already have in your pantry. These will help relieve the discomfort and stimulate digestion.

Sip a cup of tea

Mint and chamomile tea can help settle your stomach (and the smell can help soothe any nausea you may feel—so it’s great for pregnant women, who are more prone to indigestion).

It’s best to steep a tea bag for at least 10 minutes, covering the cup so the heat doesn’t escape. You can also try other kinds of herbal teas, some of which are known to help manage weight.

Teaspoon of Comfort

Some people believe that taking a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar or honey to a glass of hot water can help prevent indigestion. You need to take this at least half an hour before eating.

While there’s no scientific evidence that honey or vinegar can cure stomach woes, this cure does seem to verify something most diet experts say: drinking a glass of water before eating can at least prevent overeating, one of the key causes of indigestion.

Nibble on seeds

Indigestion is often accompanied by a bloated feeling, and a sense that you need to expel gas. To speed along the process, try chewing on a ‘trail mix’ of fennel, dill, caraway seeds and dill. This is especially helful after eating very spicy or fatty food. In fact, it is frequently served in Indian restaurants—since their cuisine is primarily spicy, then they shoud know what they’re doing!

Swallow some soda

Indigestion is often triggered by a high level of stomach acidity. You can help restore it to its natural balance by drinking a teaspoon of baking soda that’s been dissolved in hot water. You can also add a bit of lemon juice, which will help dispel some of the gas and prevent the sofa from exploding in the stomach.

Have half a toast to your good health

Too much beer can cause indigestion, but half a bitter beer can help relieve it. That’s because it contains hops, a natural stomach stimulant. And you have to admit, this cure is more palatable than drinking apple cider or baking soda!

Is it something more serious?

In most cases indigestion will pass on its own. But there is a chance that it is a symptom of a heart attack or another serious condition which requires immediate medical attention. Call your doctor or go to the hospital if the abdominal pain is very intense, or is accompanied by vomiting, or blackish or bloody diarrhea.
