Organize your bathroom clutter

June 12, 2012 by K-Reese Leave a Comment

The bathroom is the smallest room in the house, but it’s also filled with all sorts of odds and ends. Here are some ways to organize your bathroom clutter, given the space constraints.

Clean out the medicine cabinet

We bet you don’t use 90% of the stuff in your medicine cabinet. Take a big box and toss out anything you won’t need. Start with the expired stuff. Check the bottles of medicines and vitamins, and see if the sunscreen has changed in consistency, color or smell. Now, keep the basic stuff: what you use every day (like mouth wash or dental floss), or what you’d look for if you had a small accident (iodine, cotton, alcohol, band-aids).

Pare down your makeup stash

We know it’s more convenient to do your preening in front of the bathroom mirror. However, Perfumes and makeup should be moved to a dry, dark place—like a dresser or a cabinet—since humidity can hasten spoilage. One compromise would be keep just five items you use all the time (like foundation, one mascara, your favorite gloss and lipstick, and blush) and store the rest in your bedroom. If you feel the need to switch colors or shades, then just reach for them when the occasion calls for it. For example, I tend to use lip gloss everyday, except if I’m going out with friends. So my evening makeup’s in my bedroom drawer, which I pull out on Friday nights.

Hang it if you can

If you have a small floor area, then store vertically. Buy a magazine rack you can hang on the wall. Trade the big hamper for a big laundry sack you can hang on a hook (you can have one for white items and another for coloreds).

Maximize drawers

If you have a drawer, then get a utensil organizer so you can divide hair accessories (like bobby pins and clips), daily essentials like cotton balls and cotton swabs, and other little trinkets (like your favorite earrings).

Install a shelf under the mirror

Use this shelf to hold small soaps and miniature bottles of shampoo (but only if you use them!). It can also carry the small jars of moisturizer, eye cream or makeup remover, or beauty tools like an orange stick (used in manicures).

Get a product caddy

Keep shampoos, conditioners, shower gels and other bath pampering products in a neat shower caddy. Some can be hung on the shower head or pushed to the side of the bathroom. Bathroom hooks can hold loofahs or wash clothes. If you have kids, a mesh bag can carry bath toys. (Get some cool bathroom storage ideas.)
