We all know that tea packs wonderful health benefits. They’re rich in anti-oxidants, and can help lower cholesterol and keep heart disease at bay. Further research has found that specific teas may also prevent dreaded conditions like cancer and Alzheimer’s.
Darjeeling
Darjeeling that has been steeped for 5 minutes is particularly effective in inhibiting H. pylori, a pathogen that has been linked to ulcers and gastric cancer. However, don’t add milk to your tea, since this can neutralize the powerful compounds.
Oolong
This Chinese tea can halve your risk for hypertension, thanks to the high concentration of anti oxidants that inhibit the enzymes linked to high blood pressure.
Black tea
This contains four anti oxidants that can boost brain health. Scientists are still studying how it works, but the compounds bind to amino acids and prevent the formation of plaques. This can help lower your risk for Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
Yerba mate
This bitter tea from South America may not taste very good, but it’s a powerful defense against colon cancer. Scientists believe that the compounds in the tea (similar to caffeine) help destroy the DNA of cancer cells. (Read about other foods that lower your cancer risk)
