Going on a road trip with your furry friends? A few precautions can keep him safe and happy during the ride—which means you’ll also feel calmer and more relaxed. Now that’s a reason to wag your tail!
Get him used to short trips
A cross-country drive may be too much for a pet whose longest trip is an occassional drive to the nearby vet’s. Go on practice runs, like when you’re going to the supermarket or visiting a friend who lives at the other side of town. This will help him become more familiar with the car.
Get him groomed
Do you really want to be stuck in a car with a muddy dog? Schedule an appointment at the groomer’s shortly before your trip. If he feels fresh and more comfortable, so will everyone else in the car. Plus, it’ll be easier to maintain his grooming during the trip.
Give him some ‘space’
Be sure to bring a secure crate or harness. This will keep him safe during the trip, and prevent him from clambering all over the place during your trip. Remember that it’s harder and more dangerous to drive when you are constantly distracted.
Prevent car sickness
Adjust your pet’s meals so that he has smaller and more frequent portions. Do this starting a week before your road trip so he isn’t bothered by the sudden shift in schedule. Also remember to bring your own water for him because the tap water you may find along the way may cause him to have stomach upsets.
Stop every so often
Pets (and people!) need to get out of the car every so often to stretch their legs and get some fresh air.
Look for pet-friendly hotels
Identify the hotels in you route that are open to pets. That way, you’re sure of a place to stay—and can find the nearest alternative if there’s an emergency or a problem with reservations.
