After two or more years of changing stinky diapers, moms are more than ready to start potty training their child. But potty training isn’t easy. There will be a lot of tears, arguments, and messy accidents. Here are some tips to make potty training go a lot smoother—for you and your child.
Don’t make it a contest
Just because your friend’s daughter was potty trained at 18 months doesn’t mean you should pressure yourself to do the same. Each child is different, and forcing him to toilet train when he’s not ready (to the point of getting mad at him and yourself if things are not going as fast as you like) will only end in disaster. Accept the process. Laugh at it when it gets messy. Nobody starts college in diapers, and it’s not like learning how to use the toilet early is something you can put in your work resume.
Use the bathroom together
You know what works better than fancy potty seats? Letting your child watch you when you go to the bathroom. All kids like to copy their parents and this is no exception. To avoid confusion, moms can bring their daughters and fathers can be the role model for sons. Just make it easier for your child to use the toilet by providing a small stool he can use.
Give rewards
Hang a star or sticker chart by the bathroom and let your child pick the sticker each time he uses the potty. Your child may also like earning points towards a desired toy or a special treat (like a snack from a favorite restaurant).
Start with a mobile potty
If your child has a hard time holding it long enough to go to the bathroom, keep a small potty in the living room or kitchen. This makes it easier for her to run towards it when she needs it.
