A DVD writer drive is one of those components in a computer that you rarely pay attention. But when the time comes when you need it you’re glad that it’s there just silently waiting for you to use it. A DVD writer drive is a combo drive in that it performs a number of functions all in one device – it can read and write DVDs and CDs and it can also be used to play DVD media. A DVD writer is a sturdy piece of equipment but sometimes it will act up and won’t function properly. When this happens, don’t just immediately assume that it has to be thrown away. You can still find out if the drive can be fixed or revived.
First, check the CD or the DVD media. The problem could be with the media you’ve inserted. There are badly written CDs or DVDs or those that are damaged and this will prevent the DVD writer from reading it. A quick way of finding out if the media is the culprit is by inserting another DVD or CD into the drive. If it works, then the original media that was inserted into the drive is defective.
You should also open the computer case and look at the connections between the motherboard and the DVD writer. It is not uncommon for the cables that connect the drive to the motherboard to loosen. All you need to do is to inspect the connections (including the power connectors that supply electricity to the drive) and firmly re-seat the connectors to make sure that all of it is inserted properly and has proper contact with the contact points. Before you do this though, make sure that you have turned off your computer and unplugged it from the electrical outlet.
For Windows users, you can actually check the status or condition of the DVD writer drive by simply going to My Computer. Right click on the drive (as it is displayed) and then click on Properties. Look for the Hardware tab and click on it and then go to the Device Status. Ideally, what you should read is that the device is working properly. If the message indicates a problem, you should press ‘Troubleshoot’ and follow the solutions suggested.
A problem with the drive could also be related to outdated or corrupted drivers. Go to the web site of the manufacturer and look for the latest drivers for the DVD writer model that you own. To avoid any other problems make sure that you download the drivers that are compatible with the operating system you’re using.
