Chakras are supposedly the energy centers of our body that help control and regulate our organs and many different aspects of our lives. According to Hindu texts, from where the belief in chakras originated, the body has seven chakras and the belief is that if you are suffering from health issues or encountering challenges in your life, negative energy is interfering with your energy fields. The solution is to remove this negative energy by opening and energizing the chakras. Here’s how you do it.
Step one
Place yourself in a comfortable position sitting down, making sure that your spine is straight and aligned. A good way to achieve a good position is by sitting cross-legged on the floor, this is also called the lotus position.
Step two
Now try to relax and empty your mind of any thoughts. This may take a few minutes. You can achieve this relaxed state by breathing slowly and deeply, holding each breath momentarily then exhaling slowly. Imagine your muscles slowly relaxing with each breath. By the third breath try to envision your mind beginning to relax. The important thing to remind yourself to achieve total relaxation is to just completely let go, including your thoughts.
Step three
When you have considerably relaxed, you can now try and visualize your chakras. Imagine it as a ball of light. Based on Hindu texts, each chakra possesses its own unique wavelength and thus it also has its own unique color and tone. The crown chakra is violet, the third eye chakra – located in the middle of the forehead — has an indigo color. The throat chakra is blue, the heart chakra — which is located within the center of the chest — has a green color. The solar plexus chakra is yellow, the sacral chakra is located in the genital region and is orange, and the root chakra located at the base of the spin, has a red color. Visualize each chakra and its color for a few minutes before, remembering to breathe deeply, before moving on to the next chakra.
Step four
When visualizing the chakras, also visualize connecting them with energy. Imagine that the light of one chakra flows down to the chakra located below it and returning back to the crown chakra once you reach the root chakra. You can also visualize white light that goes down and enters the earth to ground you. Alternatively, you can also direct this energy to other people as a way of healing them.
Step five
End your meditation with the middle pillar visualization, in which you visualize a big column of white light that envelopes you and goes through all of the chakras in your body. When doing this visualization, imagine that the chakras are now balls of white energy. Imagine the white energy flowing all over your chakra and connecting to each other.
It’s best to do this exercise as regularly as possible. Read our tips on how to make early morning meditation a habit.
