Fever blisters, or cold sores, are something that people usually experience. These blisters appear around the inside of the mouth, even on the tongue. These small blisters are devious little monsters because such a small blister can be very painful, especially if it is located in areas in the mouth that are often touched by the tongue or by food. If adults find it quite painful, imagine how babies and toddlers would feel if they develop these pesky fever blisters. They’ll be in a world of hurt and you’ll have to contend with a baby or toddler who will be inconsolable. If your child suffers from fever blisters, there are still some things you can do to help remedy the situation.
As its name suggests, fever blisters would often come out when your baby or toddler is suffering from a fever. If he has a fever, do your best to reduce the fever first so that your child will feel more comfortable. Give him your doctor’s prescribed medication for his fever and apply a cold compress on his forehead to help lower his temperature.
The pain caused by fever blisters is mainly concentrated on the blister itself or at the very most the immediate area surrounding the blister. There are some things you can do to help alleviate the pain of a fever blister. Put some ice or an icepack on the area within the blister. The cold will help numb the nerves enough to help ease the pain the child is feeling. There are also some topical ointments or solutions that are specifically formulated to treat fever blisters. Just make sure read the label carefully. There are some creams or solutions that are only for external use and should never be applied to the inside of the baby’s mouth. Pain relievers can also help alleviate the baby’s pain. Your doctor may prescribe pain relievers for the baby.
It’s a little-known fact that exposure to the sun can actually help in spreading fever blisters to other body parts. Don’t allow your child to go out or be exposed to the sun’s rays while he still has a fever and fever blisters. If he really needs to go out, at the very least keep him protected by applying sunscreen on him and putting a lip balm that has a sunscreen formulation.
