One of the most trying parts of going on a trip are packing your luggage and discovering how heavy it is. The issue is compounded when you actually lug your heavy luggage through the airport and all the way to your hotel. A too-heavy luggage can put a serious damper on any trip so the solution is pretty obvious – pack lightly by identifying stuff you won’t need on your trip and eliminating it from the stuff you’ll put in your luggage.
If you’re still unsure about which things you need and which ones you don’t, do this simple trick – pack your stuff as you would normally. Don’t edit. Just put all the stuff you plan to bring and put it in your luggage. After you’ve done this. Open your luggage and remove everything, carefully laying all of the stuff on the floor so you’ll see everything you planned to bring. You are now ready to take out the non-essentials in your luggage.
First, think of what you plan to wear. Just choose the clothes that you know you will wear, and will wear often and set it aside.
Now think about your destination. Where are you planning to go? Think of the climate in your destination. If you are going to a tropical country then a light jacket should be the only jacket you should bring. Leave out heavier jackets since you definitely won’t need it. If you plan to stay in the islands near the beaches then get rid of most, if not all, of your formal looking clothes. There’s a huge chance you won’t need it in the laid back environment of the beach.
You should also think about your shopping plans while visiting another place. If you have plans of buying shirts at your destination then there’s really no need to pack a lot of shirts in your luggage. It’s just going to be a redundant addition to your luggage. This tip is not limited to clothes. If you have any personal items you plan to buy there then get rid of the same things in your luggage, there’s just no point in ending up with the same things at the end of your trip.
Now, that you’ve reduced the things you plan to bring, lay them out again before you and look at it once more. With a critical eye, examine the items left and reconsider everything. Chances are you can still eliminate some more items from the items you’ve pruned down.
After you’ve done this, pack your luggage again and marvel at how light it is now.
