Using visualization to improve your health

Visualization doesn’t just make you feel better; this popular relaxation technique releases the body’s natural ‘tranquilizers,’ or chemicals in the brain that are known to lower blood pressure, heart rate and anxiety. It is an excellent way to handle stress or any conditions triggered or worsened by stress, such as headaches and even PMS. Read on how to improve health using visualization and guided imagery.

Visualization and cancer

A study conducted by the Ohio State University on cancer patients found that those who used visualization felt more emotionally prepared for therapy. They were more relaxed and were more positive and upbeat. .

Visualization and immune system

Visualization can strengthen your immune system. In one study done by Danish researchers, students who were asked to imagine their immune systems growing stronger had more active natural killer cell activity. In another study done by thePennsylvania State University, people who had recurring canker sores in their mouths had les ‘attacks’ when they regularly visualized that their sores were bieng protected by a ‘shield’ of of their outbreaks after they began visualizing that the sores were bathed in a soothing coating of white blood cells.

Visualization and PMS

PMS or premenstrual syndrome can be managed with visualization. In one study done by a Massachusetts General Hospital, 12 of 15 women who used visualization techniques for three months experienced less pain and less mood swings.

Visualization and pain management

Nearly 20 patients suffering from chronic bronchitis and emphysema were studied by the University of South Florida in Tampa. They suffered from anxiety, depression, fatigue and discomfort, but all of them reported a higher quality of life after several months of using visualization techniques.

A Yale study found that people who had bad depression felt a boost in their self-esteem after visualizing people praising them and accepting them for who they were.

Visualization and breastfeeding

Fifty-five women who listened to a 20-minute tape of progressive relaxation techniques that included guided imagery of a relaxing place and abundant milk flowing through their breasts produced twice as much more milk.
