Ways of removing thick scars

January 8, 2011 by LadyCat 2 Comments

Scars are a result of skin cells and fibrolasts ( a kind of connective tissue) multiplying at a fast rate in order to repair any cuts or wounds that are deep enough to draw blood. The fibrolasts will replicate in order to form a kind of framework on which the skin cells will grow to mend the tear (or wound) on your skin. There is a kind of balance that is achieved between the rate of growth of the fibrolasts and the rate of growth of the skin cells. Sometimes, this balance is not maintained. If the skin cells multiply more quickly than the fibrolasts the result is a very thin scar, or sometimes there won’t be any scars. But if fibrolasts replicate cells more quickly than the skin cells this will make it harder for the skin cells to get into the framework the fibrolasts have created and the result is a thick scar.

A thick scar can result in noticeable deformities on the skin and for some people, the scars can result in a loss in self confidence because they think that the scars had made them ugly. If you suffer from thick scars, here are some things that you can do to help remove it.

• Probably the best way to combat thick scars is to prevent them from happening in the first place. If you’re the type who develops thick scars, prevent it from happening by applying a silicone based treatment patch on the scar that initially forms after you get wounded.

• You should consult a dermatologist and let him inspect your scar. He can prescribe a corticosteroid cream for you that you can apply to your scars. The cream has ingredients that can help minimize the total size of the scars and also help in lightening any skin discoloration. Be careful when using corticosteroid creams because it can cause your skin to thin out. Follow instructions faithfully.

• Another drug that can be used for scars are cortisone shots applied directly to the scars. The effectiveness of this treatment really depends on the skin type of the patient so consult with a dermatologist so he can make the right assessment.

• There are certain home remedies that you can try to reduce the size of the thick scars. For example, you can rub olive oil on the tissues every day. Aloe vera juice can also be applied. You can get a Vitamin E capsule, prick it and apply a small drop on to the scar. Tea tree oil is also another natural remedy for thick scars.
