Identity theft is pretty straightforward – it is when someone pretends to be another person or entity in order to gain access to that other person’s resources. In today’s society where technology plays a major role, identity theft is more easily carried out by unscrupulous individuals.
Identity theft is basically fraud, and it can happen in many ways. For example, if someone gains access to your login details for your online banking activities, that person can ‘pretend’ to be you and transfer funds to another account. The same thing applies for credit card details – the person who gains access to those details can make purchases in your name, thereby ‘stealing your identity’.
