What to pack for summer camp

June 21, 2012 by K-Reese Leave a Comment

Is your child going to summer camp? Here are some things to pack so that he will have everything he will need at this great adventure.

Clothes

It’s best to pack several items that are easy to layer. This can include T-shirts, light sweatshirts, flannels, cardigans, etc. Choose colors that are relatively easy to match. For your own peace of mind, don’t pack anything new or expensive, so you don’t freak out if it gets lost or torn. Label each item with his name.

As for shoes, these should be comfortable and sturdy. Consider what your child will probably do in camp. IF he’ll be doing a lot of hiking, look for water-proof and skid-proof shoes that are not too heavy. If he’ll be doing a lot of sports, pack good rubber shoes.
Of course, don’t forget a swim suit (most summer camps have a lake or pool), sunglasses, and flip flops.

Safety and health

Your child will need a good flash light (provide two extra sets of batteries, too!) . And while all summer camps will have a clinic that’s well stocked with first aid equipment, won’t hurt to give him some band-aids and alcohol. Insect repellant, insect bite relief, and sunblock are also big must-haves!

You can probably guess that your child will need toiletries like tooth brush, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, deodorant, powder, etc. But since it’s unlikely that he’ll have a personal bathroom, you should put these in a small bag that he can carry to the camp showers.
Ask the camp if they will be providing beddings or if you need to send linens and pillow cases. However, most camps will not provide towels. Pack at least two.

Gadgets

Best not to give your child any expensive gadgets that he can lose. However, you can get him a cheap camera he can use to document his memories and an alarm clock to help him wake up every morning.

Money

Your child may need pocket money. Ask the camp what’s not covered in his fees and what he may need to pay for during the course of his stay.
