‘An angel can illuminate the thought and mind of man by strengthening the power of vision,’ said St. Thomas Aquinas.
Angels have long been seen as messengers, guides, and in many cases, the equivalent of God’s emergency task force: bringing comfort in times of crisis, and nudging us towards the right path. Many religions and spiritual belief systems urge followers to ‘ask help from an angel.’ But how? Is there a way to connect to our angels, and access the wealth of wisdom and peace they promise to give? Here are some tips.
Clear your head and open your heart.
Angels are always there. The task, really, is to become aware and receptive of them, and turn off all the internal noise and hostility that numb us to their presence.
Go to a quiet place, and begin to meditate. Focus on your breathing. Think of the happiest, calmest, and most peaceful image or affirmation. Some people find it relaxing to say, again and again, ‘I am a child of God.’ Others may prefer to remember a person or memory where they felt most unconditionally loved and accepted—because this is, after all, what angels do best.
Consider ‘angel rituals.’
Angels don’t need a special candle or music to come into our lives—but we do. Sometimes, establishing a ritual for a ‘date with our angel’ helps put us in the proper framework for prayer and reflection. You may want to play an instrumental CD or light incense or soothing aromatherapy oils. Or, you can recite a particular prayer or invocation.
Come to the session with a specific request.
Angels are guides, and according to many belief systems, each have a particular ‘territory’ or ‘specialization.’ Some say that’s because each angel corresponds to a particular astral plane or vibration, and if we don’t knowing what we’re praying for—or who to pray to—that’s as effective as asking our plumber to fix our car.
1. Angel of Protection
Archangel Michael is considered to be the soldier of God, the great protector. Call on him to protect you from physical harm, such as traffic accidents or robbers, as well as any ‘attacks’ from people who wish you ill. For example, you can call on him when somebody in the office is trying to ruin your reputation, or when you are walking home alone late at night and are fearful of being mugged. Some people also believe that Archangel Michael can also free you from fear and self-doubt.
2. Angel of Illumination
Archangel Jophiel is the angel of awareness and wisdom. He is the one to call before an examination or a job interview, so you may receive clarity and presence of mind to be able to answer well.
Archangel Jophiel is also a powerful guide when you are struggling to break free from addiction or any barrier to success. Ask him to show you the lies and illusions that are holding you back, and to help you achieve a higher awareness of who you want to be, and what you need to get there.
3. Angel of Love
The Archangel Chamuel is the angel of compassion, mercy and understanding. He can support you in your efforts to heal a broken relationship, or to expand your circle your friends. Call on him, too, if you are suffering from emotional burdens of guilt or self-hate, or struggle with self-esteem. He can help you love yourself as God loves you—and thus be able to view life (and other people) with greater peace and acceptance.
4. Angel of Guidance
The Archangel Gabriel—known in the Catholic faith as the one who spoke to the Virgin Mary—is the messenger of God. He is responsible for all communication and guidance, and can help you find your purpose in life. Since it is also his ‘job’ to make you aware of God’s will for your life, make it a habit to ‘consult’ him before major decisions and even purchases. He can also help you when you are discouraged or confused, and reaffirm your faith in your ability to achieve your dream.
5. Angel of Healing
The Archangel Raphael is the angel of all forms of healing: body, mind, and soul. He is often seen as the angel of doctors, but his ability to soothe broken spirits and comfort us with beautiful visions also makes him the angel of musicians.
Archangel Raphael’s power over the physical body and the physical realm also makes him the angel to run to for your daily needs: food, shelter, medicine. He can also help you remove the ‘poisons’ in your life: regret, bitterness, resentment. Turn to him to help you live with hope and faith, which are the highest form of wellness.
6. Angel of Justice
Archangel Uriel is the angel of justice and can help you recreate harmony in your life. People turn to him for help in courtroom battles, but it is also possible to pray for him when you are caught in any conflict or are facing any issue where you feel that you are being treated unfairly. Ultimately, Archangel Uriel will help you restore your inner harmony, because the battles we wage within ourselves are more destructive than what any other person can do to you.
7. Angel of Joy
Archangel Zadkiel is the angel of joy, creative freedom, and the invitation to play and embrace life with a light heart. He is the true muse of all writers, performers and actors. He will also help you deal with life’s problems with a sense of joyful perspective and happiness, so say a little prayer to him when your kids are squabbling or your car won’t start.
