Makeup helps, but we all want naturally beautiful skin—that healthy, rosy glow that requires a whole shelf-full of makeup products to create. While we know the basics (eat vegetables, drink water, don’t smoke) there are a few things that we don’t—or simply forget to do. Here are some tips on how to make your skin glow.
Get tinted moisturizer
Tinted moisturizer can even out skin tone, which can really shave years from your face. A few formulas also contain bonus ingredients and benefits, like UV protection or self-tanning.
Eat fish
Fish contain fatty aids that slow down the development of fine lines, reduce sagging, and prevent blotchiness. Try getting salmon, tuna and halibut. If you don’t like fish (or at least, don’t want to eat it every day) you can get fatty acids from nuts or from a fish oil supplement.
Spritz face with water
This helps maintain skin moisture levels and contribute to suppleness. Try a formula like La Roche-Posay Thermal Spring Water, which is packed with minerals like selenium. Selenium can protect skin against sun damage.
Wear sunscreen
Yeah, you’ve heard it before, but you need it! You need about half a teaspoon for the face, neck and ears. Don’t rely on the sunscreen in makeup—it’s not enough. However, beauty products that contain sunscreen can provide additional layers of protection, which is always a good thing.
Take 10 minute spa breaks
Incorporate a little beauty and relaxation into your routine. This helps lower your stress, which can cause breakouts, while infusing your skin with nutrients. For example, try a beauty mask before you go to sleep, or indulge in a facial scrub while you’re taking a shower.
Keep a beauty bag by your bed
We’re often too tired or lazy to do our beauty routine when we get home—we just want to go to bed! Which is fine. Just keep a beauty bag by your bed, with toner, moisturizer, eye cream, lip balm, foot cream, and body lotion.
Try yoga
Certain yoga moves like Child’s Pose, Downward-Facing Dog and Sun Salutations can help boost your circulation and infuse your body with oxygen. There is also some research that regularly doing yoga practice lowers inflammation and stress that can accelerate skin aging.
Drink green tea
Aside from all the other health benefits of green tea, there’s new research that the EGCG and theaflavins it contains can prevent the breakdown of collagen, the cause of wrinkles.
