Pinterest is the new darling of the Social Media world. It can be a great tool for entrepreneurs, or a way for ordinary people to share their passions and hobbies and meet other like-minded people. With a big enough following you may even become an internet ‘guru’—respected and ‘followed’ by fans who see you as a good source of information (and fabulous photos!) Here are some tips on building your Pinterest following.
Build on your other networks
Why start from scratch? Connect Pinterest to your Facebook and Twitter profiles so that every time you ‘pin’ an item or like it then it will appear on these respective social networks. Thus, your friends/followers will naturally migrate to Pinterest.
Add a ‘Pin it!’ button
You can include a Pinterest button on your blog and website, making it easier for people to share your content on their own Pinterest boards. This introduces you to the other people who are following them.
Make targeted Pinterest boards
The name should declare what’s in it. Don’t call it ‘Dream Home’ call it ‘Creative Use of Small Spaces’ or ‘Beautiful Kitchens.’ People will only follow boards that interest them, after all. Avoid witty names too. Calling a fitness board ‘Up and Running’ sounds cute, but what the heck does it mean? Just call it ‘Running tips’ or ‘Exercise Inspiration.’
Pin frequently
People won’t follow you if your pinboards are empty or get no updates. Try to pin about 5 to 10 times a day—too many pins can irritate people, who will feel that you’re ‘spamming’ their Pinterest feed.
Don’t just repin
If you only repin content then you’re really just a copycat. Pin items from other resources so that you have new things people can’t find elsewhere.
Follow others
When you follow others (especially those that have a lot of subscribers) then your content is easily shared. Many will follow those who follow them, too.
Offer useful content
Repin interesting and beautifully designed infographics, or create a tutorial board. People will always pin information that’s valuable for them.
Write good captions
Use keywords in your pinterest captions. Saying ‘This is so pretty!’ is useless; but if you put ‘Easy nail art tutorial’ you will have a good chance of showing up on people’s Pinterest searches.
