Your skin changes as you grow older, and it stands to reason that your makeup routine should, too. The things that worked when you were 25 (like high-shimmer eyeshadow, or very thick foundation) can accentuate your wrinkles. You may also grow more sensitive to sun damage or ingredients in cosmetics.
Here are some tips on how to makeover your makeup routine as you grow older.
Change your foundation
Very thick foundation (and applying it in thick layers) can make your wrinkles more obvious. Here’s the right way to apply it.
First, apply moisturizer before putting on makeup. (Read our tips on choosing moisturizer.) Choose a light foundation with good coverage, such as Mac. And instead of lathering it on with your fingers, apply with a fine brush or a makeup sponge. Here’s one secret from makeup professionals: don’t smear the sponge or brush! across. First use a brush to dab in blotches over discoloration and other areas. Then, wet a sponge and then apply the foundation on other areas of the face.
Invest in a really good concealer
The secret is to pick the right shade and a high quality formula. Makeup experts recommend picking a yellow-based one that is about a shade lighter than your skin tone. Since it can be hard to choose just from looking at the tube, head for the makeup counter of a trusted brand (like Laura Mercier or Mac) and then ask them to help you find one for you. Try different brands and then pick whatever you’re happiest with.
Deal with hair color
Your hair is changing color, and since it frames the face you’ll have to adjust lip color too. One great trick is to pick a warmer and lighter shade of lipstick. For example, if you’ve always used a deep red, switch to one with a more ‘apple’ tone.
Readjust the way you apply shimmer
Instead of applying shimmer all over the eyelid, just dab a small amount of gold (if you have a warm skin tone) or silver (if you have a cool skin tone) in the center of the eyelid, a little above the lash line. This will immediately draw attention away from eyebags, make your eyes look wider and bigger, but also avoid drawing attention to the creases at the corners of the eye.
Look for anti-aging and SPF ingredients
As you fight the signs of aging, it helps to get makeup products that do double-duty, and contain ingredients that simultaneously nourish or protect the skin from the sun. Some makeup products have SPF, Cover Girl has even partnered with Olay to create a cream blush that has moisturizing benefits.
